Our Historical Background

History of the Highpoint Inn Bed and BreakfastReminiscent of a gracious English country estate, Highpoint Inn Bed and Breakfast was built in the mid thirties by John W. Henney Jr., an early Freeport area industrialist. For three generations the Henney family were major leaders in area manufacturing. From producing elegant wagons and buggies in the pre-civil war period to becoming a very successful automobile manufacturer in the mid twentieth century. Truman's LimoThe Henney Motor Company of Freeport went on to become one of the auto industries most prestigious and successful manufactures of specialty vehicles such as limousines, hearses and ambulances.
.
Among the more notable automobiles was the gold-trimmed interior limousine designed and built especially for President Harry S. Truman. From the New York Herald Tribune, 2/13/50, "the big new car has gold plated fittings in the rear compartment, special running boards for Secret Service men and a shiny padded leather top with sufficient headroom for the President's high silk hats". Another of the Henney Motor Company specialty vehicles was a sleek Sports Car produced in 1952. Given special attention in the industry, the Henney Sports Car received first place award at the 1952 International Motor Sports Show in New York City.
.
Lincoln Douglas PorchThe estate was originally planned as a country refuge for Henney and his nephew. Before final completion the property was expanded into an elegant country estate for his family. Henney incorporated historic artifacts in the design of his manor house. For example, the rod iron railing on the porch of the Lincoln Douglas Suite originally came from the place of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates. Known to be a perfectionist with demands for the utmost quality in his automobiles, his attention to detail was very evident in his country estate. John Henney's extra effort to assure only the best is apparent in the many unique details and features of the property and one reason the manor house appears today just as he had planned nearly 70 years ago. We feel John would be pleased.
.
As Innkeepers and hosts our goal is to help make your Highpoint Inn visit, event or special occasion exceptional and a truly memorable experience.
